Says Who?

I remember preparing to begin college—not too long ago—which is one reason this advice is so applicable. Unlike some other guides, this book is not written by someone long past the actual experience, or by a professor or dean or administrator who’s looking at the world very differently than does a student.

I read several of those other guides, and while they were helpful, they often provided too much information. They did explain the college experience, but I didn’t want to be told what college was like: like everyone I’d seen many movies about the college experience and had a general idea of what it entailed. I wanted and needed quick answers about simple things—questions such as how to get the most out my studies, or how many notes is too many notes, or how to prepare, day in and day out, for quizzes and exams. I ended up wasting time reading about things I didn’t really need to know—or things that were self-explanatory. Eventually I had to cut through the mass of details to find what I really needed. Often, this was through trial and error—an inefficient way to learn. So while I did well, my efforts were inefficient; I thus ended up working less effectively (and harder) than I had to. The point of this brief guide is to cut through that mass of details for you. Obviously there are many things to think about in college—after all, this is the launch pad for the rest of your life. This book will give you the basic principles that will help you right now. And if you implement the advice in this book right now, then you will benefit down the road when you’re applying to graduate school or for your first professional job. This book provides you with the essential habits to succeed in college.
