Before You Start

Your palms will be sweaty before you actually start law school. Your heart will start to flutter, and once you check the assigned readings you will gasp and suddenly feel the pressure of a thousand pages to read in just the first few days. And those uncertain finals you keep reading about, and upon which your career apparently depends, loom at the end of the semester.

I remember being in your shoes less than a year ago. I can still taste the uncertain nervousness of the experience. I could tell you to brush those anxieties aside, but it would do no good—you are going to be nervous and uncertain. You should be nervous—at least a little.

I might even tell you that law school isn’t really all that hard, but that would not be telling you the truth, or at least not the whole truth. Law school is, in addition to everything else, intimidating, overwhelming, stress-inducing, ego-reducing, and a whole lot of work. But it ain’t rocket science. Thus the importance of building those good habits! Nearly anyone can graduate from law school, if they put their minds to it. But then again, our goal is not merely to graduate. It is to excel.

What I will tell you is that you can do it, and you can be successful. In order to be successful, however, you need to establish some positive habits from the beginning. (If you find yourself already deep in the law school experience as you read this, just remember it is never too late to develop these important habits, and re-focusing your efforts in a positive way will be worth it.)

The next habit, and one of the most foundational habits you can have, is to make a plan and stick to it.
